Should men have long hair?
In the Old Testament long and short hair was worn by all, nevertheless, long hair was admirable among many such as Absalom, 2samuel 14:26, “his hair was very thick, and he had to cut it once a year, when it grew too long and heavy. it would weigh about five pounds according to the royal standard of weights.”
Long hair was also worn as mandatory for the Nazarites vow [num 6:5] and was worn by Sampson [Jdg 16:17], Samuel the prophet [1sam 1:11] and Jesus [mat 2:23], who were all Nazarites.
In the new testament the morals for men was however change concerning hair style when it was made clear in 1corinthians 11:14, "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?” 1 Corinthians 11:4 says, “every man praying or prophesying with his head covered dishonors his head". vs.7 says, “a man has no need to cover his head, because he reflects the image and glory of God.”
the covering that is being talked about here is not a cap, a hat or a towel or veil, but the actual hair itself as revealed in vs.14.
Paul concluded his statement in vs.16, by saying, “but if anyone wants to argue about it, all I have to say is that neither we nor the churches of God have any other custom in worship". (GNB).
We will conclude, if a person chooses to ignore this command, we as believers in Christ cannot and should not judge or condemn that person for only God is judge of his flock.
However, though many people have debated the free choice of men to wear his hair at whatever length he so desire, the New Testament principle stands that a man having long hair is a disgrace to his Christ.
