BIBLICAL MEANING OF MEDITATION
MEANING OF MEDITATION
(Joshua 1 and Psalms 1)
The word "meditation" appears in the KJV (6 times) and "meditate" (14 times), yet many people are confused as to what type of meditation it's referring to.
So is this meditation speaking of "Contemplative Meditation", "Transcendental Meditation", “Metta Meditation" (Loving-kindness meditation), "Qigong meditation" etc.?
Some people would try to sit quietly and think on biblical things, while others try blanking out their mind; but one thing is clear; Meditation in the Hebrew Bible means to actually make noises.
In the Old Testament, there are two Hebrew words for meditation: hāgâ/haghıgh, which means “sigh” “moaning”, "making a sound", (Psa 5:1-2);
Psalms 5:1, “Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my “meditation”. V.s2 “Hearken unto the voice of my cry..”
This means that the meditation involved a voice, making of cry as a form of prayer to God.
This word is also spelled "higgayon", means to “the murmur” or "dull sound of the harp," “to have a deep tone,” "to reminisce"; hence, “to meditate”.
The sound made in this meditation is similar to the "Om" sound that is made in the Eastern religions, Buddhists do this in eastern meditation because true meditation is making a sound, however, the Buddhist sounds, mantras and meditations are demonic, and the practices are corrupted by demons.
Then we have Sîḥâ/Sıḥah which means to muse, or rehearse in one's mind; “bowing down,” (Psa 119:97, Psa 119:99). This involve sitting quiet reminiscing on God. This can be done by choosing somewhere quiet like a field, beach, etc., and the sunrise or sunset in the foreground creates a scenery that lightens the flow of your mind. Isaac would do the Sunset every night.
Gen 24:63, "And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide:"
Psa_1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Psa_63:6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.
Psa_119:148 Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.
1Ti_4:15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
Meditation IS NOT just sitting quietly and thinking but it is also humming while remembering the works of God. Psalm 143:5, "I meditate on all thy works".
When we meditate, here is what the Lord says would be the end result- Joshua 1:8, "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."
Take note, God did not say He (GOD) would make Joshua way prosperous. God said "YOU" [Joshua] will make YOUR way prosperous.
The sound made during meditation is a prayer by itself and is like groanings that cannot be uttered. It also sends forth a vibration that affects the atmosphere.
These are ancient techniques written in the Bible that has been lost to Christianity.
